HYROX sled training for athletes, gyms and personal trainers
Preparing for your first HYROX race, stepping up to Pro or coaching clients towards the start line? The Hit Fitness Black Power Sled gives athletes and coaches a dedicated way to practise sled pushes and rope pulls. Build sessions around your division or your clients' goals, develop technique under fatigue and rehearse moving from the sled into the next run.
For gym owners and personal trainers, an adjustable plate-loaded sled lets you programme lighter technique sessions, progressive strength work and race-focused conditioning using the same piece of equipment. For individual athletes, it provides a clear way to build towards your category's load, within the sled's capacity.
The powder-coated steel frame has a compact 102cm x 60cm footprint, textured dual-height handles with hand-placement markings and a chrome-plated centre weight horn. Its symmetrical design lets you change direction without turning the whole sled around.
Build a sled station for your gym's clients
Coaching first-time racers alongside experienced competitors? Use the loading guide below to plan each client's training weight rather than applying one load to everyone. Men's Open and Women's Pro share the same race targets and proposed training loads, helping you organise sessions around common setups.
-
Scale to the client: start with manageable loads for technique, then increase plate weight as clients progress, staying within the listed capacity.
-
Plan changeovers: group clients by training load and have the required plates ready outside the working lane. Change plates only while the sled is stationary.
-
Coach consistent setups: record plate totals, handle positions and the training surface so progress can be compared under similar conditions.
-
Plan your purchase: check plate-hole compatibility, stack height, suitable turf space and your rope setup before building the station.
-
Know the Men's Pro push limitation: this sled cannot match or exceed the 202kg race target within its listed 150kg plate capacity. If full-load Men's Pro push preparation is essential, choose equipment rated for the required load.
Know the sled weight before adding plates
For pushes: this sled weighs 38kg with all four poles fitted. For pulls: remove the four 3kg poles to leave a 26kg sled. HYROX race weights include the sled itself, so do not copy the plate load from a heavier competition sled and assume the total will match.
Total training weight = this sled's weight + the plates you add. Use 38kg for pushes and 26kg for pulls.
Race weights and our proposed slightly heavier training loads
At McSport, we recommend training a little heavier than your race target once your technique and readiness allow. The examples below use 5kg, 10kg and 20kg plates to give you practical training loads slightly above the published HYROX totals, without needing 1kg plates. These are proposed training setups, not official race loads.
Open is the standard individual division. Both HYROX sled stations cover 50 metres. All race and training totals below include the sled.

Important for Men's Pro athletes and gyms coaching them: the centre horn has a listed plate capacity of 150kg. With the 38kg push setup, that gives a maximum total of 188kg, below the 202kg race target. Do not exceed the plate capacity to match or go above that target. Use this sled for lighter push training, or choose a sled rated for the necessary full-load preparation.
Which plates do you need, and in what order?
- Choose your station and division from the guide. Keep all four poles fitted for pushes, or remove them for the 26kg pull setup.
- Check that your plates fit the centre horn and that the complete stack fits within its usable height. Plate thickness affects how many fit; these examples are weight calculations, not verified stack-fit combinations.
- With the sled stationary, load larger, heavier plates first at the bottom of the centre horn, followed by smaller plates above them. For the 115kg push load, place five 20kg plates on first, then the 10kg plate, then the 5kg plate.
- Check the plate total before each session or client changeover and stay within the 150kg plate capacity. Build up to the proposed loads rather than starting heavier before you or your client is ready.
For pull sessions, pair your setup with the Hit Fitness Climbing & Sled Rope. Check the rope attachment and equipment instructions before use.
Make each session relevant to race day
Practise controlled pushes, efficient turns and steady rope pulls, then combine sled work with running to rehearse moving on tired legs. Coaches can use this approach to build progressive sessions for clients with different experience levels.
Turf, friction, plate distribution and sled design all affect resistance. A slightly heavier total does not automatically mean a harder effort than the race sled. Keep your gym's surface and setup consistent, and adjust training to the athlete's technique and ability rather than chasing kilograms alone.
Check the official HYROX race information and your event's current rulebook before planning race-specific sessions. This guide describes training loads and does not claim that this sled is official HYROX competition equipment.
