McSport are Ireland's largest suppliers of treadmills. Our expert team of knowedgeable professionals are sure to guide you on the best treadmill to suit your needs.

When looking at individual treadmills its important to define what you will be using it for; walking, jogging or intense running? You'll also need to consider if there will be heavier individuals using the treadmill as each machine has a different weight capacity.

Treadmill Motor

When it comes to the treadmill motor you will notice the specs mentioning CHP (Continuous Horse Power) and this relates to the size of the motor. A 1.25 CHP is on the lower end and would be considered sub-standard. 1.75 - 2.0 CHP would be satisfactory for walkers and light jogging. The average runner for look for at least a 2.5 CHP motor and those over 100kg should look for at least a 3.0 CHP.

Treadmill Track Size

Many treadmills range from 16" to 22" in width - 16" is really only comfortable for walking, whilst we recommend a 22" wide belt for runners and 20" for walkers. The belt length, as a general rule, a minimum of 50" in belt length is recommended for walkers, 55" for runners and 60" for runners over 6ft tall.

Treadmill Speed

We recommend up to 16 - 19 kmph

Treadmill Incline

Most models have up to 10 - 15% - great for burning extra calories.

Additional Fitness Apps

Another great innovation modern treadmills offer is that they come equipped large LCD displays, or they let you connect your own mobile device, like a tablet. Either way, they offer compatibility with interactive fitness apps that became a favourite among at-home fitness enthusiasts.

What’s great about those apps is that they offer affordable, yet personalised workout programs that, in the past, you could only get if you hired a personal trainer. Some apps even let your coach control the intensity of the exercise remotely. But there’s more: those apps offer an immersive experience, that virtually transports you to beautiful sceneries all over the world. Exercising at home has never been so exciting!

To help you choose the best treadmill for your fitness needs, we’ve prepared a a section with some Frequently Asked Questions.

What is a good treadmill speed?

High end treadmills can reach speeds of 22km/h or more. However, if you’re just looking for a steady paced walk, anything between 3km/h and 6km/h is fine. If you want increase the intensity, set is your speed to around 7km/h. Speeds of 8km/h and above are for jogging or running.

What's the best incline to run on a treadmill?

Depending on your level of conditioning, like your cardiovascular endurance for instance, experts recommend around 1-2% incline. If you're on a more advanced level and think you’re up to the challenge, you can set your incline treadmill to 5-6% and beyond.

Can I run on foldable treadmills?

You sure can! Even though more robust treadmills, like the ones you see in a Commercial Gym aren’t necessarily foldable, that doesn’t mean that a foldable treadmill for home use is not suitable for running. The main thing you need to keep an eye for is the running area of the treadmill: look for a treadmill with a longer treadmill belt. This way you’ll be able to take longer strides and reach higher speed.

You can walk, jog or run on a treadmill at whatever speed suits you but if you are looking for a lower impact form of exercise then let it be known that a cross trainer is best for low impact training. You may also consider a recumbent bike or upright bike as they offer low-impact cardio training. This suits people with joint pain. Stationary cycling will result in the same benefits as walking. A recumbent exercise bike is a uniquely- shaped exercise bike that allows you to sit closer to the ground in a seat that is more comfortable than a standard exercise bike.
