Today snooker is popular in most English-speaking and Commonwealth countries, with top professionals earning millions of dollars from the game. Back in 1875, however, the game was mainly played in British Army mess halls in India. It is said that one Colonel Sir Neville Chamberlain conceived the game by combining aspects of both pyramid- and life pool. The name given to this brand new type of pool was derived from a moniker ascribed to first year cadets at Royal Military Academy (Snookers) and came about when Chamberlain goaded a fellow player after he missed a shot - implying his inadequacy.

The game spread like wildfire throughout the army barracks and Chamberlain took it upon himself to promote it at the various Army establishments he was posted at during his tenure in India. Finally, in 1882 in Ootacamund, the first official rules of the game were drafted and recorded. Snooker spread from continent to continent through the travelling Army personnel and became a mainstay in the British parlour game arsenal. Although the rules of the game were not accepted by the The Billiards Association until 1900, by 1930 the game had taken over from English Billiards as the country’s dominant cue sport. It was at this time that legendary players like Joe Davis took the stage and garnered international acclaim for the sport.
