Any grounds keeper worth his salt will tell you that there are a multitude of things to keep in mind when maintaining a pitch, including mowing frequency, optimal grass length according to sport type, aeration, fertilising, supplementary seeding, pest management, as well as irrigation timing and -frequency. • Don't let price be your only consideration.
We realise that times are tough, but when it comes to a piece of equipment that you will only have to buy once (unless you make a poor purchasing choice!) you should be willing to pay a little more in order to get an item that will last longer.
• Check the size of the fuel tank.
The larger the tank, the more pitch marking you will get done in one session. A time-consuming job at best, you don't want to stop halfway through a marking session and realise you have run out of fuel.
• Check what kind of line concentrate it takes.
There is much emphasis on conservation of late and, depending on the regulations of your school or club, you may be required to use environmentally safe substitutes to conventional line marking concentrate. Make sure of these stipulations beforehand to ensure that you don't buy a marker that only takes chemical line concentrate.
• Keep your receipts.
As with any larger-than-average purchase it is best to keep your store receipt. Once you start up the marker for the first time you may find that it is not suited to your turf or that you battle to use it. By keeping your proof of purchase you will have the option of returning the item or trading it in for a different model.
