Any good trainer knows that sports training equipment forms the corner stone of any effective training regime, whether you are coaching rugby, football, netball or any other type of sport that requires speed and agility. The good news is that this equipment doesn't necessarily have to be high tech or very expensive. You can go a long way with a few jumping ropes, markers and training cones.

In order to keep your team motivated it is important to ensure that their training regime remains dynamic. For your convenience we have compiled a list of field-based exercises that can be done with a simple set of marker cones. These can be adapted to suit any sport. If you are training a football team, simply include ball passes; for hockey substitute passes for dribbling where applicable.

• Lane races
Set up four to five lanes of approximately 30 meters long. This can be used to dribble, run or sidestep.
• Horse shoe
Place eight cones in a square (one at the middle of each side of the square) and divide your team into groups. Instruct them to trot seven gaps, then sprint the next, followed by a six-gap trot and two-gap sprint, etc. - all the way to a seven-gap sprint and one-gap trot.

• Shuttle sprinting
Arrange a line of training cones that are three meters apart and 30 meters long. Players must sprint to the first cone and back, second cone and back, third cone and back, etc.
• Mini boot camp
Using markers set up five stations and divide your team into five groups. The challenge is to do 30 seconds of pushups at the first marker, 30 seconds of dips at the second, 30 seconds of sit-ups at the third, 30 seconds of star jumps at the fourth and 30 seconds of bench jumps at the fifth; each exercise interspersed with 30 seconds of breathing time.
