Since its establishment in 1945, Basketball Ireland (previously known as the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland) has been promoting, developing and administrating all basketball activities in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The sport has subsequently grown from a mere two championships in 1925 to almost 300 basketball clubs around the country with over 1200 local teams going head to head in competitions across various levels.

The focus at this stage is to develop Irish basketball at all levels by establishing a strong network of domestic championships, and increasing participation levels across all age groups. A team sport quite unlike any other, basketball has the potential to bring communities together.
